What are the functions of modern game publishers? [closed]

According to the Wikipedia page on Video game publishers, they are responsible for "their product's manufacturing and marketing, including market research and all aspects of advertising." From what I've read, they also arrange for the development funding.

In the following questions, I'm asking about AAA, indie and mobile publishers:

Do today's publishers fulfill any other functions? Is there any good reading material on these topics?
